A Natural Innovation for Organic Labeling

This week the USDA announced new standards for labeling and marketing foods as "organic," which will hopefully resolve some of the confusion consumers face over packaging.

With the enactment of the National Organic Rule, foods may only be classified as "organic" if they have been produced without hormones, antibiotics, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers, genetic modification or bacteria-killing radiation.

The standards are a victory for health- and environment-conscious consumers who want transparency in their packaging. In addition, common standards for farmers across the U.S. - and indeed, for those exporting organic products to this country - will benefit shoppers.

As Patricia Unterman writes in Green Home Living Magazine, organic products are the fastest-growing market segment of the retail food industry. Although they presently account for only 2 percent of the total food supply, sales have been increasing 20 percent annually. And with increased public attention to the presumed benefits of foods raised without pesticides, chemicals or other additives, the need for definitive standards is finally addressed.

Also, the National Organic Program web site at the USDA contains consumer information on labeling, fact sheets, lists of accredited certification agents, state approved programs and more.
