About Smoke and CO Detectors
Carbon Monoxide (CO), which is produced whenever fuel is burned, causes the largest number of accidental poisoning deaths in the United States. Ironically, as fuels have become purer (reducing the risk of CO exposure), houses have become more airtight, increasing the likelihood of death when the fatal gas is present. Fortunately, you can take some simple steps to greatly reduce your risk of poisoning: - Schedule an annual inspection of your home heating system in fall or early winter.
- If you cook with natural gas, be sure your kitchen is well ventilated.
- Never barbecue in an enclosed space.
- Install CO detectors, preferably near bedrooms, as recommended by The U.S. Consumer Safety Commission.
